May 8th “The Incarceration of Japanese Americans” - Japanese American families living on the west coast of the U.S. were systematically rounded up and incarcerated in make shift camps throughout 7 states. Most lived their lives out of fear for their children’s safety and did whatever was necessary to maintain their families well being. Some did not.

May 15 “Go For Broke” - Many struggled with the decision to enlist, or not to enlist in military service while their families were being held prisoners. The war was escalating and decisions had to be made. Unquestionable loyalty to the U.S. was demonstrated by the Japanese in Hawaii, the 100th Battalion, which led the way to the beginning of the 442nd Regimental Combat team!

May 22 “The Return Home” - When the camps closed, the bittersweet return of Japanese American families was full of fear and anxiety. Wanting to return home but fearful of the malicious hate they knew they would face… would they be able to find work,… would they be able to trust that the police and firemen would help if they were in need?

Nevada County Pride Month Proclamation

Nevada County elected officials and staff have been a supporter of our work for many years and we are so pleased that The Board of Supervisors of Nevada County will be honoring June Pride Month with the first official county proclamation at their regularly scheduled BOS Meeting. The county joins all three cities - Grass Valley, Nevada City, and Town of Truckee - in making a June Pride Month Proclamation. Visibility matters and it would really make an impression if A LOT of people showed up. There will also be time for public comment in support of the resolution and you are encouraged to speak if you would like. Please go all in for rainbow attire!

Note that the meeting starts at 9:00 AM and we expect to be on the agenda in the first half hour. Updates will be made here as we get closer to the date and in the Mid-May newsletter.

June 5th “Racism and Redress” - The Civil Rights movement in the 1960’s provided the impetus for Japanese Americans seeking redress, and an apology for the incarceration.

The work that guided the Civil Liberties Act into becoming law was initiated by the Japanese Americans Citizens League at their convention in 1978. Oddly enough, the JACL was first organized in 1929 by a group of young Japanese Americans for the purpose of protecting Civil Rights. At that time in 1929, the JACL members were fearful of what was going to happen to them, because the country was enduring the Wall Street Crash, the Great Depression and was headed for the environmental and economic impact of the Dust Bowl…the seeming collapse of society!

In 1988, when the Civil Liberties Act was signed by President Regan, the President lamented to the audience, ‘the Japanese American Incarceration was a mistake!’ The 10 years of work it took to bring the Civil Liberties Act to the fore, restoring a sense of justice, honor and dignity to our country, was done by ordinary men and women, the backbone of our country!

June 12 “Could This Happen Again?” - When our country’s Constitution was created, the framers challenge was for the citizens to continue the work of the Constitution by moving it toward a more just and perfect union. Based on the their ideals, the final program in the series focuses on three main areas. #1. The cause of the Incarceration of Japanese Americans, named by a federal commission, was racism, war hysteria, known today as the politics of fear, and the failure of political leadership. #2 Addresses how the public was immersed in prejudice through movies, books, schools, universities, national organizations, family bias and fear. #3 Calls us back to the Constitution’s challenge by looking at how each of us might be failing the promise of the Constitution for ourselves and others. Our first president, George Washington, urged the citizens of our fledgling democracy to grow in awareness, social consciousness, civic responsibility, and personal involvement! Our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln warned us of the consequences of misusing power in government!

"Surviving The Silence" Film Screening

Nevada County Pride and Onyx Downtown Present Special Film Screening and Fundraiser

Nevada County Pride and Onyx Downtown are proud to present a special screening of Surviving the Silence, an inspiring documentary that tells the powerful story of love, resilience, and activism within the LGBTQ+ community. This fundraising event will take place on Tuesday, April 29th, at the Nevada Theatre. The screening will be followed by a conversation with the film maker, Cindy L. Abel, and the two women profiled in the film, Colonel Pat Thompson and her wife, Barbara Brass.

Doors open at 6:30 PM and drinks and snacks will be available at the bar, with the film beginning at 7:00 PM.

Nevada County Pride invites all supporters, allies, and community members to join this unforgettable evening. At a time when civil rights are being stripped away from the LGBTQ+ community and other marginalized groups by the new federal government administration, this film reminds us of how far we have come and how easily these hard-fought rights can be taken away. It is now more important than ever to come together and stand up together.

With all proceeds going to Nevada County Pride, tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door or in advance at  https://www.theonyxtheatre.com/movies/1000020103-surviving-the-silence/

We are seeking sponsorships and donations to help cover the cost of the event. If you believe in the importance of preserving history and fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those who have fought for change, please consider donating. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a significant difference. You can securely donate here.

Sarah Adams at Wild Eye Pub

Sarah Adams is a sapphic folk americana rock artist originally from South Carolina, now based in Denver, Colorado. Sarah wants to let people into her world, authentically telling her story in the hopes of freeing others to do the same. Sarah’s performances captivate audiences through her soulful voice, honest storytelling, and dynamic musical range, weaving between high-energy folk rock and poignant Americana ballads. Drawing inspiration from artists like Brandi Carlile, Eva Cassidy, and Sara Bareilles, Sarah shares deeply personal and relatable stories, making her live shows a powerful and unforgettable experience.

Sarah has built a strong reputation across several prominent venues and festivals, including:
Denver Pride Fest Center Stage – Denver, CO (2,500 people)
Water Lantern Festival – Windsor, CO (2,000 people)
Central Energy – Columbia, SC (400 people)
Arvada Days Festival – Arvada, CO (100 people)

Sarah’s songwriting delves into everything she encounters: from the magic of the kids she nannies, to the perils of making art in a capitalist world; from the excitement of freely living out her sexuality, to the releasing of the trap of perfectionism, Adams explores honestly.
Sliding scale tickets for this performance are $15-30 per person. More information at the link below.
