Once upon a time, before most of us knew what a Coronavirus was, the Queers of Nevada County would come together for bar takeovers (aka “Queer Interventions”) and dance parties (aka “Queer the Area”). It has been years since we’ve gotten to hold these events, but now the moment we’ve all been waiting for is on the horizon! Queer the Area is coming back!
On June 4th from 7:00 to 10:00 PM, we’ll be kicking off Pride Month at our favorite stompin’ (and shakin’) grounds, the Wild Eye Pub. DJ Beth Koppe will once again be gracing us on the decks and we’ll be dancing into the night.
All are encouraged to dress with intention. Express yourself! Push the boundaries of how you allow yourself to show up in the world. We’re talking fashion! Decadence! Looks darling, LQQKS! Whether you're dripping with rhinestones or covered in floral print from head to toe, serve us your finest. Extra points for gender bending/blending/fuckery! Show us your butchqueen. Astound us with your androgyny. Make us look twice, make us question who we thought we were, leave us aghast and humbled and begging for more!
…or, if you just want to come out and be surrounded by community, you are welcome to do so in whatever attire in which you feel comfortable. This is an open invitation to all Queer people and the allies that love and support us.
A suggested donation of $10 will be accepted upon entry to help cover the costs of this event. (Please bring some cash to help contribute!) No one will be turned away for lack of funds and if you have extra to give, please do so to help support those who have less.
Queer the Area is a way for Queer people and their allies come together to create welcoming space in the public arena. Everyone’s safety is a top priority to both the event organizers and staff of the Wild Eye Pub. There will be a designated group of people who have volunteered to be part of a safety crew. They will be wearing an armband in order to be easily identifiable. If at any point during the evening there is someone or something that makes you feel unsafe, please find one of those people and they will assist you. Any issues that are brought to the attention of the staff and/or safety crew will be taken seriously and handled accordingly. As a Queer-centric event, transphobia, racism, homophobia, sexism, ableism, and the like will not be accommodated. Examine your prejudice and then leave it at home.
It’s been a long pandemic, and we know it’s not over yet. We’ll be watching case numbers and paying attention to regulations put forth by county, state, and common sense. Stay tuned for any updates regarding covid protocol before the event.
